Type one line. Get a finished meme.

TextToMeme reads the shape of your sentence — a complaint, a flex, a before/after — picks the layout that fits, and renders it on canvas, ready to download. You bring the line; the tool does the layout work.

Try it: type "My code works and I have no idea why" and watch which layout it chooses — then read why.

Matching is done by simple keyword and pattern rules in your browser — not by an AI model or LLM, and your text is never uploaded. See how the matching works. Layouts are original recreations, not the original photos.

Live preview — the meme updates as you type.

How it works

1. Type a line

Anything you would say out loud: a complaint, a win, a hot take, a dilemma. Add a second line if there is a twist.

2. The shape picks the layout

Simple rules scan for patterns — versus, disaster, money, achievement — and choose one of nine layouts. The page tells you why.

3. Download the PNG

Tweak the caption slots if you like, then download. Rendered locally, crisp at any size, no watermark.

One line, many shapes

Honest about the “AI” part

Many tools call this “AI meme generation”. TextToMeme's matching is a published set of keyword and pattern rules — closer to a good editor's instincts than to a language model. That has real advantages: it is instant, it works offline in your browser, the same line always gets the same layout, and your text is never sent anywhere. When the rules guess wrong, the layout menu is one click away.

Frequently asked questions

What is TextToMeme?

TextToMeme is a free text-to-meme generator. You type one line of text, it reads the shape of the sentence — a complaint, a win, a comparison, a disaster — picks the meme layout that fits, renders it on a canvas in your browser and lets you download a PNG. No sign-up and no watermark.

Is this an AI meme generator?

Not in the LLM sense, and we say so plainly: the matching is keyword and pattern rules running locally in your browser. There is no AI model and nothing is uploaded. Rules are predictable — the same line always picks the same layout — and you can override the pick at any time.

How does the layout matching work?

The tool scans your line for patterns: "vs" or preference words trigger the two-panel layout, disaster words trigger This Is Fine, achievement words trigger Success Kid, money words trigger Stonks, a hot-take marker triggers Change My Mind, and anything unmatched falls back to the classic top/bottom layout. The full rule table is published on the How It Works page.

Do I need a second line?

No. One line is enough — the second line is the optional twist: the other option in a comparison, the result in a success story, or the punchline in a classic layout. Adding it usually makes the meme land harder.

Are these the original meme photos?

No. Each layout is an original canvas recreation — colour blocks, a large emoji character and caption zones — inspired by a classic format. It is not the original photograph, and the file is crisp at any size because it is drawn, not re-compressed.

Is TextToMeme free?

Yes. The generator, every layout and PNG downloads are free with no watermark. A Pro plan at $9/mo is planned (saved lines, custom characters, larger exports) but it is not billed today — there is no checkout on this site.
